Lejeunea cavifolia Micheli's Least Pouncewort

(Ehrh.) Lindb.

A small, autoicous, leafy liverwort that grows on trees and rocks in humid wooodlands and other moist places and often creeps among other bryophytes. Lejeunea species have a distinctive appearance with pouch like lobules but distinguishing them in the field can be difficult. Microscopic examination of the oil bodies in the leaf cells, which are small and very numerous in Lejeunea cavifolia, is usually required for safe indentification. It has a western and northern distribution in Britain and is found throughout Wales. In West Glamorgan, it is frequent along the south Gower coast and scattered elswhere, usually as an epiphyte on trees in valley woodlands. Sporophytes are frequent.
