Holmen & E.Warncke
A pale, dull-green, dioicous, pleurocarpous, calcifuge moss which grown on soil in acidic grasslands, heaths and moors but rarely on rock. Like other Hypnum species the nerveless leaves are prominently curved but it has rather symmetrical, regular pinnate branching with together with the dull, washed-out colour lends it a distinctive appearance. It often grows in very large sheets on acidic banks in heathland and moorland. It is widespread and common throughout most of Britain, except for parts of southern and eastern England, and it is ubiquitous in Wales. In West Glamorgan it is frequent on the Gower Commons and very common in the uplands of Neath Port Talbot. Sporophyte capsules are occasional.
