A slender, dioicous, pleurocarpous moss which grows as an epiphyte on bark that is not too acidic and also on base-rich siliceous rocks and limestone. It is the most slender Hypnum with leaves that tend to point upwards from the stem and are not as curved as those of the other species. It is not mapped separately in the Atlas of British & Irish Bryophytes but our records indicate that it is widespread in lowland West Glamorgan and perhaps under recorded. Sporophyte capsules are occasional.
