Hygroamblystegium tenax Fountain Feather-moss

(Hedw.) Jenn.

An autoicous, aquatic pleurocarpous moss which occurs on stones, boulders and tree roots in or by streams and rivers. It is similar to Hygroamblystegium fluviatile, but it tends to be more rigid and the leaf tip is blunt, not acute. Also, unlike that species, it prefers base-rich water which is not flowing rapidly. It has a similar distribution in Britain, but is less common overall in Wales. It is occasional in West Glamorgan with a scattered distribution. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in summer.
