A dark-green to blackish, pleurocarpous moss which grows on rocks near to fast-flowing rivers and waterfalls. It is similar to Heterocladium heteropterum but the distinctive nerve is quite thick, forked and extends to over halfway in the leaf. This Oceanic species is rather scarce in Britain with a patchy and local distribution in the west and north with Wales being one of its strongholds. There are two records of it in West Glamorgan from Neath Port Talbot. It is dioicous and sporophyte capsules are rare.
