(Gottsche) Pearson
A small, hyperoceanic, dioicous leafy liverwort which is almost black in colour. It has a strong, aromatic smell and grows on vertical, base-rich rocks near the sea. Frullania fragilifolia grows in similar places and is also scented but its leaves are deciduous. Obervations of coastal populations of both species in Pembrokeshire by Sam Bosanquet indicate that Frullania microphylla grows lower down on the shore than Frullania fragilifolia. It is rare in Britain with an extreme western distribution and is well represented in west Wales. In West Glamorgan it has only been recorded in the extreme west of Gower. Sporophyte capsules are frequent throughout most of the year.
