Similar to Fontinalis antipyretica but much more restricted in its habitat range and preferring rapidly flowing, acidic rivers and streams. It is also smaller and its leaves are rounded, not keeled. It has a more western distribution in Britain than Fontinalis antipyretica and is widspread and locally common in the western half of Wales. It is occasional in West Glamorgan. It is dioicous and sporophyte capsules are occasional.
