A dioicous, acrocarpous moss that forms dense turfs or cushions on damp or wet base-rich substrates, particularly chalk and imestone. It occurs commonly on dripping calcareous rocks and cliffs where it can become petrified and form large areas of tufa. It is also found where there are seepages on concrete structues as well as other habitats such as calcareous flushes and wet rocks near streams and waterfalls. It has a largely western and northern distribution Britain but is absent fom much of mid and north Wales. It is locally frequent in West Glamorgan and occurs mostly along the south Gower coast. Sporophyte capsules are rare.
