Didymodon spadiceus Brown Beard-moss

(Mitt.) Limpr.

A dioicous acrocarpous moss which grows in base-rich places on alluvial sand, stones or tree roots along streams and rivers paticularly in the uplands. It can be confused with other Didymodon species, particularly Didymodon fallax and Didymodon tophaceus. It has a patchy western and northern distribution in Britain. It is not commmon in south Wales and there have been no records of it outside Gower in West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are occasional.
