Dicranum scoparium Broom Fork-moss

The most common Dicranum species in Britain which forms medium or large yellow-green cushions or patches. It has a wide ecological range and grows on the ground in heathland, woodland, roadside banks and also occurs commmonly as an epiphyte and on logs, stumps and fence posts. It also grows in unimproved grassland, fixed dunes and occurs in Sphagnum bogs and among rock and scree in upland areas. It is found throughout Britain and Ireland and is very common in West Glamorgan. It is dioicous and male plants are very small and uncommon. Sporophyte capsules are scarce overall but more frequent in high rainfall areas.
