(Hedw.) Lindb. ex Milde
A very common, small to medium-sized, cushion-forming, acrocarpous moss which is found throughout Britain but is uncommon in Ireland. It is epiphytic on the trunks and larger branches of trees and in the uplands is commonly found on fence posts, stone walls, rocks and boulders. It also occurs on conifer logs and the cut stumps of conifer trees in clearfelled areas. It is common in West Glamorgan, particularly in the uplands where it is often found on rock. The pincushion-like colonies of this monoicous species usually produce abundant sporophyte capsules.
