(Hedw.) Dixon
A loosely tufted, yellow-green, dioicous acrocarpous moss which is common throughout Britain except in the north of Scotland. It is a pioneer species which colonises bare ground and is frequent in arable fields, soil banks, tracks and bare ground in grasslands. The relatively long, narrow leaves are bent backwards at their tips and expand into a wide sheathing base near the insertion with the stem. Some forms of Trichodon cylindricus are very similar to it and occur in similar habitats, but do not have the wide sheathing leaf base. It is frequent and scattered throughout West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are very rare.
