A small, dioicous, acrocarpous moss which forms reddish-orange tufts on damp, acidic soils, often near water, but also in other habitats such as soil banks, woodland and tracks. It has a largely western distributiom in Britain and is common in Wales. It is scattered throughout West Glamorgan. The erect, or slightly inclined sporophyte capsules are occasional.
