Climacium dendroides Tree-moss

(Hedw.) F.Weber & D.Mohr

A smart-looking, dioicous, pleurocarpous moss of damp grassland and other areas that are at least periodically wet such as dune slacks, coal tips and the edges of lakes and streams. It also grows in wetter habitts such as fens, flushes and even swampy alder woods. The neat, tree-like (dendroid) growth habit makes it look like a miniature conifer and is immediately apparent. It is frequent in suitable habitats in the west and north of Britain and is widespread in Wales. It is scattered throughout west Glamorgan particularly in riparian zones. Most colonies are unisexual and sporophyte capsules are rare.
