(Hedw.) P.Beauv.

A dioicous, acrocarpous moss which forms large, robust, dark-green tufts on rocks and boulders in the flood zone of fast flowing rivers, mostly in the uplands, preferring habitats that have some base richness. It is largely a species of the west and north of Britain and is a frequent member of the river shore flora in south Wales. It is frequent along the River Neath and the River Tawe in West Glamorgan.
