Chiloscyphus polyanthos St Winifrid's Moss

A common autoicous leafy liverwort which forms mats on rocks and boulders at the sides of streams and rivers. Common associates include Scapania undulata and Platyhypnidium riparioides. It is common throughout Britain particularly in the west and north, but scarce in parts of middle and eastern England. It is confused with Chiloscyphus pallescens and sometimes difficult to distinguish from it. However the two species tend to grow in different habitats and differ in the morphology of their perianths (on female plants). Those of Chiloscyphus polyanthus are undidvided and not toothed. Sporophyte capsules are frequent.
