Bryoerythrophyllum ferruginascens Rufous Beard-moss

(Stirt.) Giacom.

A montane, acrocarpous moss which is widespread in north and central Europe. It has a patchy distribution in Britain, occuring in the west and in the upland and mountainous acreas of Scotland. However, it aso occurs increasingly in ruderal habitats. There are scattered records of it in West Glamorgan mostly from distubed sites, open mosaic habitats and coal tips. Sporophyte capsules are unknown in Europe but plants often produce rhizoidal tubers.
